Here is wikipedia's version:
A blog (a contraction of the term "Web log") is a Web site, usually maintained by an individual with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.

I was even asking this a few years ago too. I came to the conclusion it was the media's renaming (hence making it seem new) of bulletin boards which I had been using since the 80's. Before the Internet and even before services like Prodigy, Comuserve, AOL, etc. individuals would have a computer, modem, and bulletin board software. They would leave their computer on all the time for others like me to dial up and read and post messages, download drivers or programs, and pass on fixes. You would have a list of them, call one, then call another. Each one would have a topic like games, movies, computers, etc. Back then the other option was to wait several days for the driver or program update to be sent in the mail.
